The Faia Brava Reserve is encased between the Marofa mountains and Douro vineyards, at the deep gorge of the Côa valley. The granite slopes that dominate the landscape where the origin of the Reserve's name (Faia means cliff, locally), and are idyllic places for cliff breeding birds. Griffon and Egyptian vulture, Bonelli's and golden eagle are some of the species that make Faia Brava such an interesting site for wildlife.

SMany reasons make this reserve a unique place: it is inserted at the Archaeological Park of the Côa Valley (World Heritage by UNESCO) and two archaeological sites with carvings and paintings are identified; it is a Special Protection Area (SPA) of Natura 2000 network; is considered an Important Bird Area (IBA) by Birdlife International and it is part of a Forest Intervention Zone, the biggest area of cork oak at Guarda's district. In 2010, The Faia Brava Reserve was classified by the Conservation and Forest Governmental Institute (ICNF) as Protected Area, the first in Portugal managed by a private organization.

Covered with woods of cork and holm oak, shaded by deep cliffs where big raptors fly and wild herds of horses and cows run freely, at the Faia Brava Reserve nature is the most important value.

As a conservation action, Associação Transumância e Natureza (owner and manager of the Faia Brava Reserve), built a Feeding Station for Scavenger Birds where a photographic hide was placed. During the breeding season it is possible to stay inside the hide (20 meters from the feeding place) and enjoy one of the most amazing scenes of wildlife.
