Stage 1 River spring - Vilar Maior

Places where you can start this stage: Fóios, Vale de Espinho, Quadrazais, Sabugal, Malcata, Rendo, Baraçal, Vila do Touro, Rapoula do Côa, Vale das Éguas, Seixo do Côa, Valongo, Miuzela, Badamalos, Vilar Maior.
This stage starts near the Côa river spring, at Serra de Mesas.
The trail goes down the mountain through dirt tracks until it reaches Fóios, passing by large blocs of granite and extense areas of shrub and woodlands, agriculture and pasture fields.
During this stage of GRVC, some parts overlaps the Small Route of Côa Spring PR3 Sabugal, marked with yellow and red stripes).

After Fóios, the trail goes across the left border of the river, surrounded by wetlands and grazing fields. After climbing up to Cruz Alta and starting the descent to the village Vale de Espinho different watermills can be seen. Azenha da Peça is the place where you cross the river and there it is also interesting to see Moinho do Engenho.

Between Vale de Espinho and Quadrazais you will walk through the right border of Côa until Moinho do Rato (watermill), where you will cross by the walking pontoon, surrounding then Cabeço do Colmeal and Alto da Vinha. Complementary trail towards Quadrazais.

The path crosses hills and woods from the Nature Reserve of Serra da Malcata, reaching a mountain top called Alto da Machoca. There one has a privileged view towards the Côa and the city of Sabugal.

The path skirts around the dam of Sabugal. Before one reaches the city, there is a chance to pass by the river beach or to visit the Zé Ricardo's mill.
The stage crosses Sabugal and there are points where the GRVP olverlaps the Grand Route of the Historical Villages – GR22. The trail also matches Pequena Rota Meandros do Côa (PR1 SBG) and the stages 3,4 and 5 of BTT Center of Sabugal.

Follow the alternative trail for Mountain Bike/Horseback riding "Desvio BTT/Equestre Quinta das Vinhas".
After finishing the alternative trail, the Route passes near by the village of Rendo, crossing the river in a point close to the Moinho do Delfim "Delfim's mill". It follows then the left shore of Côa, passing through fresh grasslands on the way to Quinta dos Moinhos. There one crosses the river once again, forging through farms, hills and woods until the village of Rapoula of Côa.

Follow the alternative trail for Mountain Bike/Horseback riding "Desvio BTT/Equestre Rapoula do Côa", towards the village.
After crossing Rapoula do Côa, the Route makes its way through agricultural tracks, close to the left shore of the river. Eventually it reaches a place called Ínsua, from where one can take a path to the village of Vale das Éguas (2,1km without Route signs) or to the river beach of the same village (700m).

The Route proceeds across woods and pastures until Ribeira do Boi ('Brook of the Bull'), a brook that one is able to cross during Spring, Summer and parts of Autumn.

Follow the alternative trail for Moutain Bike/Horseback riding "Desvio BTT/Equestre Termas do Cró".
After crossing the brook, the Route continues its way up towards the village of Seixo do Côaand then goes down again by road until reaching Côa again, where the river beach of Seixo do Côa is located.

Follow the alternative trail for Mountain bike/Horseback riding "Desvio BTT/Equestre Valongo do Côa".
After crossing Valongo do Côa, follow the road towards Ponte de Sequeiros and after crossing it, there is an alternative trail towards Cerdeira do Côa. After, there is also a trail to the village of Miuzela and to the river beach of Badamalos (without Route signs). The final part of this stage is done by crossing the bridge José Luís and then going upwards to the village of Vilar Maior, crossing also the village of Badamalos, with a non-signaled trail (4,4km).
